How can I get each new record to add 1 to a field?

Hi

I have search through this forum for the autonumber option, but could not fine the answer to this question.

I would like to know if it is possible to have a field in each record that adds 1 every time a new record is added, but will change each of these fields if a record was delated?

The reason for this is, I have created a asp web page that shows a table with each row being numbered starting at 1, this number goes up one at a time. ie. 1,2,3,4 etc.

I want the field in my access record to provide this numbering, they are not ID's by any desciption, just row numbers. So say I have 5 recoeds on the web page it would show 1,2,3,4 & 5, if I was to delate record number 3, the database would change the numbers about so there would only be 1,2,3 & 4 records.
