Hi

my server admin has just asked me to FTP my Frontpage site (I used to upload 'normally' using standard 'publish') and after publishing, the site doesn't appear. It comes up with error 404. I used the onboard Frontpage FTP utility and am running FP2002. I have checked that the server is running Frontpage server extensions and they told me they are.

I have a feeling that there needs to be a file called home.htm or something installed on the root of the site server to get it linked.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

I had a similar issue when I first got started...although it might depend on how your server is set up.

My basics:

set the publish to load to ftp.yourserver.com\yourserver.com (the root directory of my server has a directory called yourserver.com that holds the site.)

Also try renaming the homepage to index.html

if in doubt, use IE to explore the site, just type in ftp.yourserver.com and it should prompt you for the login info.

Any help to you?

Hi Wooglin thanks for your reply

I have not had any luck yet in getting it working. Have tried to publish the site to both ftp.mydomain.net and ftp.mydomain.net/mydomain to no avail. I also tried republishing replacing index.htm with the .html (both locations) as you suggested but that also unfortunately didn't work.

At a bit of a loss and still trying my service provider.

Thanks again for your inspiration

First, if your host has the FP server extensions installed your should NOT use FTP - you should use the FrontPage Publish feature, which uses HTTP - not FTP. FTP will corrupt your server extensions. If you have no use for any of the FP features that require the server extensions, like forms, search, etc - then you do not need the extensions installed on the server and you can use FTP -no problem.

Your web should have a file called index.htm or Default.htm as the homepage if you want your site to come up in a browser by typing in the Domain only, i.e. instead of
If your host says that the extensions are installed and you are having a problem with the publish feature not working, you could let us know what the specific problem is and we can help direct you - or just get in touch with your tech support and let them know (they should already know) that using FTP on a site that has FP server extensions will corrupt the server extensions. You'll probably have to have them reinstall the extensions at this point anyway.

Thanks Tiffany and Wooglin for your insight. I have just found out what I did wrong from my provider. I was targetting the wrong folder for the site at ftp.myserver.net and it should have been ftp.myserver.net/
Wooglin had it nearly right with the sub-directory publish, I just had the wrong sub-directory.

Thanks Tiffany for your valuable insight about extensions.

Have a great day
