How can I get a caller ID box to work off of a MLX 28d

Once of my clients would like to hang a caller ID box off his MLX 28d in order to save all the incoming numbers.
Do I use an MFM?

As far as I've worked with MFM it can either be setup as an independent tip/ring device (e.g. - modem, fax, etc.) or as a supplemental alert device (e.g. - light for incoming calls). But I've never set one up with a Caller ID box.

I don't think that the MFM will be viable to the best of my knowledge. And you can't just plug the Caller ID box in before the phone line gets to the MLX phone since there's ISDN current and I'm assuming the Caller ID box is analog. Not good.

You could try a single-line POTS phone that connects to a tip/ring port on the Merlin and then plug the Caller ID box before the line gets to the single-line phone. That should work.

But otherwise unless you can rig the Supplemental Alert feature of MFM to pass along the Caller ID I can't see the MLX phones working out.

Anyone else know of a workaround?

I don't think that the Tip/Ring ports will pass caller ID info. You would need to put in 408 GS/LS-ID cards, have loop-start lines with caller ID from the telco, have a processor that supports Caller ID (I can't find my pocket reference right now, don't remember which release provided it), and enable LS ID Delay (so the switch will wait for the 2nd ring before presenting the call to stations, thus capturing the ID info).

If you put a call-id device in the line between the legend and the co, you can log calls that way. But if you have an immediate-answering auto attendant it picks up before the caller id device can get the data.

Other forum members have said that the best/only way to have legend do this is to have a CMS, like Passageway, etc. Especially if your trying to monitor for one extension only. Or a printer logging the calls might work (?)

Also don't forget that Legend's caller id circuitry is kind of wussy; mine won't always capture the data while my $20 cordless phone consistanly does....
if you put a call-id box betwixt the legend and co with less then perfect wiring your legend might magically loose it's clid ability.

Oh also TTT's right the TR won't recreate the CLID data, that comes from the CO and you get a big ol 'no data' on your phone :)

Good point about the tip/ring phone. I guess it wouldn't inherently get Caller ID sent its way. You could setup a PC with the SMDR connector and record the daily call details using Windows 95/98's Hyperterminal --> Capture Text to File logging function. At least there would records kept and you could print them out or electronically store them.

Actually to clarify something, if you have Merlin Legend r7.0 you would have the ability to have an 016 ETR (Enhanced Tip/Ring) card. This would allow certain ETR-compatible analog phones to be able to get CLID passed along. According to my docs it appears as if the ETR-6, ETR-18, ETR-18D, ETR-34D, Business Cordless 905, and the TransTalk 9000 models work with ETR functionality.

If you aren't on r7.0, don't have an ETR card, and don't have ETR phones then why not just try SMDR ported to Hyperterminal for a trial?
