how can i format columns displayed in Report Form Letter

Ive got a form letter Report. The columns are embedded using &<my_field>. How can i format my date fields so that they show up different than the database default? Do I have to format the columns in my select statement or can I format then directly on the report?

You can use TO_CHAR in your query in the data model to format the date into a text field.
