How can I edit read only records in a DBGrid??

I am displaying records in a DBGrid. When I select all records that meet my query criteria, they are now in a "read only" format. This does me no good, because I want to calculate all the values in the Color field (for example) of my newly selected records to Red. However, they are all "read only." I can select any group of records I want, but can then edit none of them. Surely there must be a way to calculate fields in a group of selected records.
Any suggestions?

What are you using? Tables? queries? Steven van Els

I'm using a DBGrid to display .dbf files. What I meant by query was a an SQL statement I constructed and placed into a string variable. It selects what I want, but then I can't make any edits, which is a must.
