Hi,
I am not sure if this is the right place to post my question.

On winXP, how can I decompress files with extension .gz, or .Z that is compressed in unix by gzip, or compress?

Thanks alot

So does mine. How did you transfer the files? If by ftp it's possible that they came over as ASCII - try resnsing them using binary transfer mode.

Are you sure your .gz is compressed by Unix command gzip?
When I tried to decompress the data with winzip, the error message says "Invalid compressed data, unable to inflate."

As for ftp, I think it should be OK, because I use BI mode, and I use it all the time.

Or, would any one please recommend compressing tools on unix, whose compressed file can be inflated by winzip?

Thanks

.gz are compressed with gzip
.bz2 are compressed with bzip2
.rar are compressed with rar
.Z are compressed with "compress"

you could try "Unix tools for windows" (google it)

cheers.

thanks alot
Now, I realized that winzip does work for .gz.
The reason I can not inflate it is because my diskspace is not enough, so, the .gz file is not complete during the transmisson processes.
