Here is the report layout desired by my client:
Category is 1st group then department name (e.g HR) is the 2nd group and emp names are the details. Now If it was typical lay out like 1st group on one line, 2nd group on second line and details on third line, it was not a problem at all. But I need to find out how can I create following format. Also, department names will be provided through a parameter, so user can enter one or two or all department names.
Category is fixed and would show categories from 1-10.

Category Finance HR Accounting R&D
===================================================
1 FLName FLname FLName FLName
FLName FLName
FLName

2 FLname FLName FLName FLName
FLName

3 FLName FLName FLNname FLName
FLanme FlName
FLanme

Any idea , tips are highly appreciated.

Thanks pgtek. But I think it is not multi column issue.
As you can see there are two groups Category, and Dept Name.
How would you show them in multi column format when they are desired to appear as heading on each page?
This is how the report would look when created in typical layout:

1 (ist group)
Finance (2nd group)
FLname
FlName
FlName
HR
FLName
FLname
Accounting
FLName
R&D
FLName
2
Finance
....
... and so on

Hi,

You can add 2 groups to display your category and department name, put category and department name in each group and detail records stay in detail section.

Hope it helps.

This is a crosstab format. If you know the maximum number of employee names from any department, you can use {table.category} as the row field, {table.dept} as the column field, and {table.emplname} as the summary field. Insert the summary field multiple times using NthSmallest, N=1, as the summary and changing the N value each time up to the maximum number of employee names.
