I am working on developing a website for our customer to access and review tracking information.

I was asked to set it in a way that they will simply type

gohere.mydomain.com

in the URL. I thought that all I needed to do was create an A record in my DNS server and an alias in Apache. Well, that is not working.

What am I missing?

Thank you all in advance for your valuable help!

The DNS A record is right, but you need to set up Apache to use VirtualHosts

You don't HAVE to have vhosts, unless you web server has multiple web sites defined. You should (at least) get a connect.

Are their requests hitting your server? check accesslog and errorlog.

Is the path (between their browser and your web server) have a properly configured firewall? Does your server have a firewall.
