How can I convert Word footnotes/endnotes to normal text?

I have been trying (with no luck) to remove the footnote/endnote links in Word so that they are treated as normal text when converted into other software applications. Is there some other way to remove these field codes and preserve formatting, beyond saving the entire file as a rich text or plain text document?
