I have a database that was written by another programmer that has since "fell off the face of the earth". The database was written in btrieve using the dta extensions. How can I convert the data so that I may rewrite the app in Access? I'd also like to preserve the linking if possible.
Thanks in advance everyone!

Hi

I am not totally familiar with btrieve, however a couple of points:

First the good news

Using an ODBC connection it should be possible to connect to the data and import it into Access, the ODBC driver may be included with Access, I am not sure

Now the bad news

I would doublt you will be able to import the relationships, you will need to redo these manually, but once you have the data structure in, this may not be a big deal, depending on the number of tables and complexity of the design

To the best of my (limited) knowledge, the btrieve databas ewill include ONLY the data, the forms, reports etc will be help in some otehr front end application, or even if they are held within the brtrieve structure it will not be possible to import them to Access, so you will have to redevelop the 'front end' application

Some versions of Pervasive can access BTrieve files through SQL. AFAIK BTrieve itself does not maintain any relationship information. BTrieve is a 'flat file' arrangement, and "relational" processing is via code. Key is correct to say that all processing (of BRtieve) data is done via a seperate language. Pervasive SQL SDK (again, selected versions) provides a set of low level routines to facilliate the access to BTRieve files, providing you know hte structure. There is (or at leaset used to be a seperate BTRieve Forum here, and other may aslo have some information re these files. If you know what 'fromt end' the dearly departed used -and you are familiar with it), most of the routines necessary to retrieve the info will be in that app.
