How can I check if a sub directory exists? 1

Newbie to PHP, I have an image gallery where the images from individual events are stored in separate directories.
I've got a calender that passes a variable via a form (post method) and is picked up by a php script. This works well but only if the matching folder (name of variable) exists. How can I check via PHP script to see if a folder exists?

so.. is_dir() will tell you if it is a directory.
