How can I be a super user?

This is my first time I work on an Mac platform and my boss has just asked me to navigate thro iBook I have and start the unix terminla. I have worked for a short time on Unix b4 but not on something called "Darwin"?!
Is there any difference between both???
Another thing is that I am told to change the super user.But everytime I start the terminal i dont need a password or login how can this be and what can i do to be the super user or admin on the machine.
