Apart from where you mount it (e.g. /dev/hdc4 under Linux), you can use tar to back-up data and write it on the mounted zipdrive. That's the low-level backup for home computers... Just put it in a shell-script run by cron.
For a professional backup solution a zipdrive will often be too small. I also recommend rsync or amanda for network-backups.
