Hi - We have a small network with 1 subnet. I need to be able to dynamically assign certain machines ip addresses from a specific range. I basically need 3 groups - one group of machines will be assigned ip addresses from range 1, another from range 2, and so on. I'm looking into using DHCP Scopes but fear that this method may affect cross communication on the network. Any advice would be helpful please....! Thanks.

DHCP can assign a range within a subnet even multiple pool ranges in the same subnet. The only way to guarantee that a particular PC (on your single subnet) gets and address within a particular range would be to create a reservation within that range. Doesn't fulfill your requirement of being dynamically assigned.

Don't know why you would want to set up multiple ranges on the same sub-net, maybe you could make clear the reason for this requirement? Any reason you can't just create one pool and allow DHCP to assign any address to your DCHP clients?

Hi, Thanks for the response. Basically we have a Borderware Steelgate firewall and we are using the SurfControl plugin (not the full package). The only way it seems to restrict internet access is by IP address - so I need a range of IP addresses that will be assigned to machines that have full internet access, another for machines that will be given access to a certain number of sites, and a final range for people who will have very restricted access....

There is a URL filter within the plugin but there is a problem in that it cannot cope with domain usernames over 8 characters (how bad is that!)

If I set up 3 ranges on my subnet, how could I be sure that a particular machine would be assigned an ip address from the same subnet when it's lease expired?

Thanks again.

You would have to set up Permanent IP Leases AKA Reservations. Reservations do not expire. You just have to be aware that the Reservation uses the MAC address of the NIC card. So if the machine or the NIC ever gets swapped out... You would have to redo the Reservation again.
