How can I alter a field from memo to character?

I have a table (transactions) that has a memo field (trans) in it. I need to modify the memo field and make it a character field. I have tried ALTER TABLE and ALTER COLUMN, but the only thing VFP does is delete my field. Thanks for any help.

You'll need to add a new field first, then use REPLACE or UPDATE to populate the new field, then delete the original field, then (optional) rename the new field to the old name.

Be careful with the data. It is easy to loose when doing this.

Hi!

Following commands work very well here:

create table aaa (aaa M)
alter table aaa alter column aaa C(35)

column aaa of table aaa changed from memo to character(35) after last command.
