How can I add a DLT Tape Drive SCSI?

Hello friends!

I just completed installing SCO 5.0.6 on a COMPAQ Proliant 7000 - I used the SmartStart CD.

The installation went well except that my DLT Tape Drive is no where to be found. I created the EFS Disks (all 5) and during installation of SCO UNIX, system failed to recognize any of the disks when prompted for it.

There's got it be a way I can add the drive without having to start all-over again. The drive is connected to an integrated controller.

At boot, I notice two controllers but how can I tell which is the one the drive is connected to?

As you all know, I need the answers for 'mkdev tape' - I guess that my question would be: Where do I get the answers for 'mkdev tape'?

Thank you all in advance!

In my experience, SCO installation has NEVER automatically installed a SCSI tape drive. I have always had to use 'mkdev tape'.

In order to use 'mkdev tape', you will have to know which SCSI controller the DLT is attached to, which bus on that controller the DLT is attached to, and the SCSI ID assigned to the tape drive itself. The ID is usually a group of jumpers that configure a binary value (1-2-4-8) of 0 thru 15. The default (traditional) value for a tape drive is 2 BUT that is NOT carved in stone. You can get all this data from the tech that built you computer or you may have to crack the case and get it yourself.

Another small item, if you intend to ise 'cpio' with a DLT, you MUST use 64k blocking (-C 65536) or else the DLT performance is abysmal.

Gafling,

Thanks for responding!

I agree and I am aware of what I need to add the tape drive using 'mkdev tape' - My problem is that I do not have the answers for it ... but like you said, it looks like I am going to have to call COMPAQ and see if they can help me out.

I have installed UNIX on other Proliant Series and I am sure that the tape drivers are loaded from floppy disk which is prompted for while installing UNIX - This in turn, installs the BLTD thus making the tape vissible and usable.
