Hi,

I would like to know if there is a way to allocate more storage space to system restore in vista. Currently, I am only able to hold about 15 restore points and I want to be able to have restore points that go back further than just a month ago.

Any input is appreciated,

thanks alot.

AFAIAA, the only way to increase the space available is to install a larger HDD. System Restore will use up to a maximum of 15% of the available disk; so a bigger disk means more space and more restore points.

Restore may use up to 30MB a point, but you can limit the size by choosing what you want restore to keep.

By using a large, separate boot partition, you can set restore to only make Restore points for that partition, and therefore make many more restore points before it overwrites the oldest point. How you proceed obviously depends on what you need to restore and the purpose of multilple restore points.

Have a look at the DiskPercent value in this Key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore\cfg, See the Value @DiskPercent

Increase hard drive space for System Restore

You might prefer to use Vista's Complete Backup program, or other third party Imaging programs to keep images of your hard drive for as long as you want.

Thanks linney and tf1 for the input. I appreciate it.
