Hotel phones are disappearing

A buddy of mine travels to Vegas and Miami a couple times a year and states that mostly Miami seems to have more hotels with no room phones.

I guess with roaming temp add-on rates etc most are using the mobile instead of the room phone however there are still people that do not use mobiles, mostly elderly and what about calling for room service or 911 etc?

I found this 2016 Article to be an interesting read on what some hotels are doing or not doing.

I can see both sides of the argument, but life safety (calling 911) should be the reason to keep it, whether it's mandated by the state or not!

Sure people use their cell phones, but when I want to reach the concierge or front desk, I use the hotel room phone. On the opposite end of the spectrum I’ve stayed at some really nice hotels that have Avaya 9670s, Nortel 1120Es, Mitel IP sets and even Cisco IP sets in the rooms. The people who get rid of hotel room phones are the short sighted people who think the whole world, including 911 centers, can operate on public cell phones.

IP or digital phones are a good option because you can send an alert to the front desk when the phones are unplugged and also when they are plugged back in so that they don't have to send security up with the batons.

I like room phones because just like RLSbutton if I want to contact front desk for something then I don't want to look for the number in my cell but just lift the receiver and dial 0

Plus normally when you call the hotels main number from your cell, you receive some call center, not the hotel itself....unless it's a small boutique hotel.

I've been to Vegas, NYC and upstate NH and I still Telematrix/Teledex analogs. Never seen a digital or a "native" IP telset anywhere I've been. Wished I did!

But this cord-cutting is insane. You need it for emergencies. The IT departments must be managing it to "cut" corners to make "revenue" for the c-suite.

I'm wondering if Avaya's pro stance on Kari's Law*, has put a burden to hotels and decided to dump them because of compliance trolls...and they wonder why they are bankrupt? Heck, Avaya thinks PBX systems kills people!

*This is a law that was a reactionary method after a mother was killed in a Texas hotel by a man and the then 6 year old daughter tried to call "9-1-1" but didn't know she needed to enter a TAC. Apparently no follow up of what the man's background, the MO for killing or what. The PBX/KTS/KSU/MLTS killed the woman. That was the narrative...Avaya's officials sensationalized the story; doing a change-dot-org movement for banning 9 or 8 to get to 9-1-1 and did some flirting with the FCC to get it to become a mandatory law.

It's time to shut down the all male/abusive behavior of IT. Time to turn yourselves in sysadmins - misogynistic behavior is over!

Who are the deviates who have a problem with protecting the most vulnerable members of society? When the chips are down? like with Kari, an emergency number is all these kids have. They can't even open the door.

There's a case settling in my locale this week. The boy didn't know how to dial emergency. Mother and step dad murdered overnight. Spent three days with their corpses. Starts screaming if he ever sees the colour red. His first question, 'why didn't anybody come and help me?'

I never want to read about that type of event again.
