We have just had a new server and it has 3 36.2gb hard drives installed. We are using raid 5 but would like to have a hot spare added at a later time. Is this possible without reconfiguring the whole of the raid array??

What type of Disk Array are you using? Is this just on a RAID Controller Board, or on a Disk Array Unit? How is your RAID 5 setup, via hardware or software? What OS?

The disk is a HP smart array 642 and we will be running windows 2003 server. Its raid 5 over 3 disks as that is all that come with the server and we set it up using the onboard hard ware as it gave us choices before we booted in to any cd roms.
Hope this helps

You are in the wrong forum, but to the best I know adding a hot-spare later shouldn't be a problem for any read-cntl today.
I don't know the HP smart array 642, but Compaq have had this feature for God knows how long time.
Just remember to install the software for the raid-cntl under Windows 2003 so that you can do it without reboot.
