We are in the process of getting a new server to run Linux and are not sure whether to use hot swappable drives or just have 2 drives that use software raid. We understand that swappable drives decrease downtime (to be down for a short time would be ok - or at least long enough to put a new drive in the server). Swappable drives seem to be expensive but we are not sure of the pros and cons of either of these choices. Any suggestions?

We went the hardware RAID way, this seems to require no user intervention at all.

We have a pretty new installation, so I didn't have a field problem yet, but I did unplug 1 drive for a test, all seemed OK, on replugging the drive got a bit busy, probably updating itself. There was no user interaction required. One thing I'm still need to sort out, how will I know if the disk failed? Currently I get no notification, this is an issue I still need to address.

One problem I'm still trying to solve though is to access the hot swap tape drive, no luck up to now. IBM Certified Specialist - MQSeries
