Hosts file populates with AV junk - Malware / Virus

A friend brought me a notebook that was acting funny - the Firewall was disabled and Antivirus was not running. I loaded the newest version of Symantec Endpoint Protection and after clearing out the hosts file (which was full of junk entries that stopped LiveUpdate from working) I got the newest definitions in there and got a full scan going.

It found the Trojan.Nebuler and the more generic Trojan Horse, as well as SecurityRisk.URLRedir (which simply means the hosts file was full of junk). I cleared the viruses and now the system seems much speedier. However, after each reboot the hosts file repopulates with the junk and a fresh virus scan shows only the SecurityRisk.URLRedir issue.

I have run the latest Ad-aware version with the latest definitions, but at this point the only thing it finds is tracking cookies.

I ran HijackThis, and ran it through the logfile analyzer:

As you say, nothing serious.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winbfi32 - winbfi32.dll (file missing)

This registry entry is leftover from virus and not dangerous, because virus file is deleted (file missing), but better to remove.

Check if hosts file is not read only.

Follow Symantec recommendations exactly as they say, especially about System restore
