Since the hosts file uses ip I thought this is one place someone maybe able to assist me.

Are there domains that by default, Windows hosts file is ignored? Like when attempting to block a site? i.e.

127.0.0.1 aol.com
127.0.0.1
This changes a ping response from "unreachable" to a icmp reponse from the local host instead.

How can I block or hamper aol connections via hosts file?

I saw your post regarding this in the W2K3 Server forum, and I was really hoping someone had an answer for you. I've seen the same problem when trying to use the hosts file to block Hotmail.

ICMP, FTP, Telnet, all follow the hosts file, but IE does not. Have seen this with IE 6 and 7.

Let me add, FireFox also follows the hosts file.

Use an address other than the loopback address.

For example

10.10.10.10

Of course making sure said address doesn't reside on your network. Additionally it would be easier to have an internal DNS server than to change many host files.
