How to prevent DNS Registration on a server with 2 NIC? I have a Webserver with two NIC Card
NIC 1 IP 10.0.1.1
NIC 2 IP 10.0.1.2

I have two website configured on this server WEB1 and WEB2
WEB1 uses IP 10.0.1.1
WEB 2 uses IP 10.0.1.2

Under WEB1 I have 10 different Website (virtual directories)(all the website used by internal user)
Under WEB2 I have only 1 Website (virtual directory)(website used by outside users)

DNS has registerd both IP address. I have cleared the checkbox not to register 10.0.1.2 and it still register into DNS.

what's happening is when interal users try to access Intranet site it does not work it is hosted under WEB1 / 10.0.1.1. When I delete the DNS entry for 10.0.1.2 it works or if I access it using IP address instead of name.

What's the best solution of this issue?

nslookup result for server name with only one entry in DNS
servername.domain.com
10.0.1.1

I am not sure what the result will be with both register entry (10.0.1.1 and .2). I will try that and post later after it registers both entries.

one more question on website hosting.
I have two website with it's own IP, now under website properties what should I configure for IP all assigned or particular IP.

We configure for each particular IP as we dont use host headers. (We have alot of extra ip's at the moment ;) We then use A Records to point to each particular site as it can be IP specific then.

Well in regards to the servername/site I am not sure if or how you can have just the computer name resolve more then one website, this may be something to do with host headers as I am not super familiar.

In my case, an nslookup for say the ip of the site that hosts our which is correct, so if you were to run an nslookup on the name that you want and be correct, say web2.blah.com you need to incorporate an A Record for that website so that it points to that NIC's IP using web2 as the Host name .. As long as your internal machines use your dns server you would create a new zone blah.com (or use the one you have) and create the A Record to point to that IP..

They would still need to have the forwardslash web2/thesite, but as long as web2 is the A Record you should be good to go. I am writing this while in the middle of a few things so if this isnt even what you were looking for I am sorry and good luck in your quest. :)

Hi Cstorms,
This is intranet site for internal use only so there is no blah.com. we access it using
How can I configure this?
We configure for each particular IP as we dont use host headers. (We have alot of extra ip's at the moment ;) We then use A Records to point to each particular site as it can be IP specific then.

This is headache to delete dns entry for other IP address every 8 hours.

Host header will only help if you got a DNS entry that corresponds to that host header. You also may have some caching going on at the clients (ipconfig /flushdns will clear dns, nbtstat -R will clear wins).

You could create an A record in DNS, say, 'intranet' and have that point to the IP address 10.0.1.1:

Open DNS management console on the DNS server your clients use, select 'forward lookup zones', right click the zone and select 'New host (A)'. Enter 'intranet' for 'Name' and '10.0.1.1' for 'IP address'. You don't need the PTR record, this will resolve the IP back to the pseudohostname, so uncheck 'Create associated pointer (PTR) record'.

In IIS, click the 'Advanced' button on the 'web site' tab, select the entry '10.0.1.1' and click 'edit'. Enter 'intranet' in the 'host header name' field and 'OK' out.

Try from a client. If it doesn't work, clear the caches as described above, then do a 'nslookup intranet' from the client and see if it is getting the 10.0.1.1 address.

Thanks Yesti,
Name of my site is Intranet.
Can I create Host a record with the name of the server?
There are many sites hosted on this server will this affect other sites.

Thanks

one more thing to look into
I have two NIC on web server and I am hosting two website on each NIC
NIC one has like 15 different virtual site under it. so editing host header want affect all other sites hosted using NIC1 and NIC2

-Can I create Host a record with the name of the server?

There should already be an A record (maybe two) in DNS for the name of the server that points to 10.0.1.1 (the second one pointing to 10.0.1.2). That is your problem when you try as DNS will give one IP or the other, and the client will cache it (bad if it gets the wrong one obviously). By creating another DNS record 'intranet' and pointing it to only one IP, DNS will only give that IP out for that name.

-There are many sites hosted on this server will this affect other sites.

It depends on how you access the sites. For all the 'intranet' sites, etc. should work assuming you were accessing those sites as previously. Let me know if this is not the case.

For the external website(s), I am assuming that users enter from the internet, go through a firewall and are sent to the 10.0.1.2 IP address via NAT? Since you only have one website on 10.0.1.2, users sent to that IP hit that website no matter what.

-I have two NIC on web server and I am hosting two website on each NIC. NIC one has like 15 different virtual site under it. so editing host header want affect all other sites hosted using NIC1 and NIC2

Host header names only affect the website they are specified for. Since you have two separate websites, specifying a host header for the intranet site won't affect the external website.

-I have two website with it's own IP, now under website properties what should I configure for IP all assigned or particular IP.

The internal website should only listen on 10.0.1.1 and the external on 10.0.1.2 (so NOT 'all unassigned').
