Hello,
I have DSL, my computer is always on, I have a URL registered and now I want to host my small business web site on my computer.
I would appreciate any tips on how to do this, thanks in advance.
Jill

Hi,

You first need to make sure that you have a static IP, then you need to install a web server.

I would suggest that you check out forum65 (Apache forum) and you can get started there. Make sure to read over the FAQ section. There is a lot of very useful information that will help you to get started.

Hope this helps!

Hi all,

Firstly, you don't need a static IP address, you can run a server with a dynamic IP just as easy.

faq65-1832 explains how to set-up Apache, Perl, PHP & MySQL on Windows.

This FAQ is for Version 1.3.x of Apache though, so if you opt for version 2 then somethings are different.

Hope this helps Wullie

Ok, thanks guys, I'll go read up on it.
If you have a moment, perhaps you could briefly outline the steps to hosting one's own site. (In English for a newbie please!)
Thank you!!

Jill,

As you already have the domain name, all you need to do is set-up the web server, mail server and FTP server.

The web server set-up is explained in that FAQ, the other two servers are available from many sources and it depends what features you want and the price you want to pay (if any)

After you do that, you need to set-up the DNS so that your domain resolves to your machine's IP. There are many ways to do this but I would reccomend you check out as they allow you to have full control and are free for the first 5 domains.

To use Zoneedit, you need to transfer your domains nameservers to zoneedit, the site provides all the details of how to do this.

Hope this helps Wullie

And don't forget to apply all security patches if Microsoft and to install some sort of firewall (software or hardware). Hope I helped / Thanks for helping

If all you want to do is host your own website, it is not worth the effort. You can get your site hosted for as little as $60 per year. Clive

Clive,

Hosting your own site puts you in control.

When your site goes down, no more calling desperately trying to get an answer from your host, no more e-mailing your host asking if they have a certain module or to install it if they don't.

When your site goes down, you fix it. When you need a module, you install it without having to pay any extra or explain your reasons to anyone else.

You have as much server space as your machine allows, if you want more, you buy it and it belongs to you, you are not renting it. You have as much bandwidth as your connection allows also.

Running your own site boils down to a lot more than simply saving yourself some money that you would have paid to another host.

The other great reason for doing it is the amount of knowledge that you gain from the experience.

Hope this helps Wullie

Hear hear!
I never knew how to make web sites before last year. Could I have paid someone else to make mine for me? Sure I could have. Would I be now making money designing them for other people if I had? No way!
This hosting stuff IS pretty complicated, and I'm about as mechanical as a tooth pick, but will I do it myself? You betcha!
Thanks for all your help guys. It hasn't sunk in yet, but I am going to learn this!

Good for you Jill
Norton Internet Security or Personal Firewall would be a help, but they are really designed for desktop PCs, not servers. It depends on how you are going to set it all up, but the key point is, make sure you have something that will protect you! Hope I helped / Thanks for helping
