Hi All,

This may sound like the dumbest question in the world but IIS in XP and 2000 look so legit I just gotta ask.

Can I host a web page using the PROFESSIONAL version of either Windows XP or Windows 2000?

Thanks for the info.

Aloha,

James

Hello James,

Yes you can host a website using Windows2000 or XP Pro, BUT it can't be a mainstream web page. When I say that I don't mean that microsoft limits you to what you put on your webpage they just turn the features way down. I believe (Not sure about XP, but pretty confident in win2k) that it limits you to 5 users logged on at one time. But if this website is not going to be used by any one other than say family members it works just fine :). To install IIS you just need to go to add remove programs in your control panel and go to the install windows components. Good Luck.

Oh also I forgot to mention that other features are turned down / off. For instance there is no bandwidth throttling and things of that nature (although I suppose you wouldn't need them with the limit of 5 users ;) )

To avoid all confusion by Brad, let me fill you guys in on the deal. First of all IIS is an option with Win2k and XP Pro, not XP home. Once IIS is installed you can configure it to allow more then 5 people at a time. I have had my website up and running now for nearly 6 months on XP Pro and I never have had a problem with having too many people on the site. I actually have tested the PC, which was a 233 MHz with 256 MB RAM, by having 20 students hitting it at the same time. No problems, even for a 233 MHz. Oh, and btw, the 233 MHz was also in the process of handlng an FTP site at the time.

Hope this helps. Jason Wichman

I agree with Jason (I should have been more clear). It all depends on the type of website you are running. Unless you plan on getting 100+ hits a day the 5 person limit isn't a big deal.

Thanks guys I have now decided to make the full switch to xp. Also I admire the professionalism between the both of you (Jason for the "no offense" line and Brad for no taking any) that's not often found in these forums.

Aloha,

James
