If you are having a problem with Windows Updates you could try the Fixit Tool from this article?

How do I reset Windows Update components?

Is System Restore an option yo get back before any updates? Or can you just uninstall the Windows update that caused the problem?

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.

I see lots of recommendations here for programs like the following, you might have picked up some "nasties"?

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

SuperAntispyware

No the system is clean.

And the updates always get installed correctly, but if there is a restart required I get this message, and no other effects, this time the network notification icon was showing limited connection after the restart, but the connection was fine. Restarting again fixed it.

Might give the logfile a check, nothing at all in the performance monitor.

Any type of minor Networking glitch can cause the error or warning about Limited Connectivity.

From a Command Prompt have you tried the command -

Netsh Winsock Reset

- in order to reset the Winsock configuration of your machine.

This is an old XP article but some of the later parts of the article may still be well worth a read and provide some things to look at.

Limited or No Connectivity Error Message

If after any updates you reboot into "Safe Mode with Networking", it would be interesting to know whether the error warning still occurred?

Will do, Probobly need to wait a month to try it tho!

I tried booting into safe mode, it seemed to hang when it got to an AVG driver load.
Gave it a few minutes, no change, so then I went away for 20min and when I got back it had loaded with no error message.
Rebooted and again there was no message.

Isn't that a normal part of Windows Update? I get the message, too. I don't understand that to be a problem? It's just telling you that you need to restart Windows. IMO

Nevermind. I see the info in your title is your problem. I misunderstood.

my suggestion... uninstall AVG, then see how it is booting, if it is the cause then replace AVG (Avira or Avast are good replacements), from some that I read, it is causing lots of headaches lately...

if it isn't causing the issue, then you can install AVG again, and nothing is lost, except time...

Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

Dont forget that this happens only once after a windows update, doing incremental selective start of services would take months.

Do you know an appx time when the error first occurred? Perhaps doing a system restore, referenced by linney's post on 6 Apr 11 15:33. Of course, you'd have to redo the updates since that point in time, but perhaps one of the updates caused the issue to begin with.
