Host name changes...

Hi there,

My RH 9 box keeps changing the hostname from

linux1.mydomain.com

to a non qualified hostname

linux1

without any apparent reason.
After this happens obviously all services configured with the fully qualified name fail, especially squid, leaving the whole network without Internet.

I have never had this kind of behavior with older distributions. Is there a problem with RH9?

Edit the /etc/sysconfig/network file and add...

HOSTNAME=linux.foo.org

Also, don't forget to edit the /etc/hosts file to include
your new hostname.

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
192.168.1.1 linux linux.foo.org

To change the hostname immediatly, run...

/bin/hostname linux.foo.org

Hi,
the hostname is not a TCP/IP name and cannot (in theory) be a FQDN. The host name is an entity name of the box and not the network address.
Set the host name to 'linux1' and edit the network files /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf to match the network topology.

I wish it was that easy...

Editing /etc/sysconfig/network, hosts, resolv.conf
is usually the normal procedure I follow to get the box restarted.
That is why I asked if there was any bug with RH9 as I have been working with Linux since vers 5 and never come across comething like this before.

I was running RH7.3 on the same box with no problems.My misery started when I decided to upgrade to RH8 and then format to install RH9.

Do I have to downgrade to RH 7.3 ?
