host.frm not found mysqld_safe

Googled a lot but no help. My sqlserver dies insatntly saying cant find host.frm
However in the logfile it says:
/var/lib/mysql/linux.err: permission denied
and more like this.
What do I need to do?

Make sure the mysql process has permission to read and write to /var/lib/mysql/linux.err would be a good first step.
