Host files needed?

In order for our Lotus Notes and Domino severs to communicate with each other, the host file has to have the following in it:

192.168.0.14 LOTUSNOTES
192.168.0.14 Westerham01/Aqualisa
192.168.0.14 Westerham01

(Server host name: LOTUSNOTES
Server name in Domino: Westerham01
Domino Domain: Aqualisa)

Is this normal for a Lotus environment to only work with the correct host files? Host files are pretty primitive and didn't think we needed to use these.
