Since this is my first web page, I need suggestions on finding a host. Also I have heard that some sites won't let you keep your name if you ever move to another one. Once I have my name (or address) I don't want to lose it because it will be printed and painted on several business items. Can anyone walk me through this process and suggest who I should use. The site won't recieve very many hits, since it's just for a local business. Thanks.[bigsmile]

I've done both a transfer of a domain name to a new server and a new domain/new site. I've never heard of a host keeping a domain name--and I don't know how they could keep it because they don't own it. When you purchase a domain name, it's yours. You can purchase it by itself or through them when you get your site. When you renew, you will pay a separate company who "rents" the domain name to you.

I personally have used Verio as a host and have had absolutely no problems (and actually an increase in visitors because of the better service than my previously provider). Their web site sign up process will walk you through everything you need to do. You can find them at Linda Adams

I went to some of the domain name sites to check then out. If I understand right, do you have to already have a host (or use them as a host) when you sign up for a domain name.
Is that right? My web page isn't ready yet, but I wanted to go ahead and get my name, can I do that?

Your choice on what you want to do. All the hosts I've seen allow you to purchase the domain name when you get the site, but you can also get it separately. To purchase the domain name directly, run a search for Network Solutions--might be at

Another one of my many questions. Is there anyway I can set up web pages for my kids free of charge. Of course there wouldn't be hardly any hits, just friends. They want one, but I can't see paying for one just for fun, and I've heard that some sites let you have so much space free, but would that also include the name, or would I still have to purchase that?

Try to register your domain name. You own it. After that you will have to find a ISP to host your domain. You will have to signup for hosting, then get a I.P. address, the you will have to go back to where you register your name and transfer the site to the IP address given you. Go Daddy charges $9.00 a year. I can host your site for a begining costs of $25.00 per month. Dave
