Hello everyone,

I'm interested in setting up a proxy server at home, as I travel quite frequently and I am restricted to access to most of my work by home IP address (firewall rules). So I would like to setup a proxy server at home in order to tunnel through my home IP address at whatever location I may be.

What software should I use? Will both http and ftp access be available via this tunnel? Are there any security issues that I should be concerned about? Is this even feasible?

Any help would be appreciated.

your biggest concern should be whether what you are doing is breaking the rules/security policies of the place you are working in.

firewall rules are set up by a reason; in fact, a nuclear power station fell victim to the Slammer worm because - whilst the network was firewalled - one of the computers had an undocumented tunnel opened to another (non-protected) network.

Should you decide to go ahead anyway, you'll be able to find a wide variety of proxy software, both free and paid for. What suits you best will depend on what you're familiar with - such as Linux or Windows.

yes, I understand the rules.

I'm sorry I wasn't more clear, maybe you misunderstood the issue... it's not a matter of breaking out of a firewall, it's a matter of my server recognizing me.

Not really breaking any rules.. just making myself mobile..

Ah, I'm sorry, I thought you meant:
[tt]
[ mobile work ]

[ firewall ]

[ home ] ----- web[/tt]

When in fact I'm guessing you mean
[tt]
[ mobile work ]

[ home ]

[ firewall ] ----- [ work ][/tt]

If you're familiar with *nix, the most secure method would be to set up an SSH tunnel (rather than a HTTP proxy), because it reduces any private data's exposure.

All you'd need is an SSH server at home (any *nix with SSH should do the trick) and an SSH client on your mobile computer (Putty is free, open source, and highly recommended).
