hooking up terminal server to sun box

how do u hook up the terminal server to a sun box.. the terminal server gets 1 ip address and many ethernet ports.. so u plug in one end of an ethernet cable into the terminal server but the other end of the ethernet cable.. where does it go.. does that go into an actual nic port ?? thanks in advance...

It needs to go into serial port A on the Sun box (it's a serial, not ethernet, connection). You will most likely need an adapter from the RJ45 connector on the end of the cable to the DB25 pin serial port connector.

The purpose of a terminal concentrator is to concentrate multiple serial connections onto one IP address. They look like ethernet ports, but they aren't.

is the adapter an actual 25 pin adapter ? i have one and i only see a few pins.. the back of it its to connect the rj45 cable from terminal server

The newer servers have a rj45 port the older ones db25. On the db25 only a few pins are used 2,3,4,5,6,8 and 20 I think.

Each serial port on the terminal server is assigned a port number so let say you have a port number of 2025 and the ip of the terminal server is 192.168.200.210 then you would -

telnet 192.168.200.210 2025

Sun basically uses three pins (1 transmit, 1 receive, and a ground)and depends on the type of sun system you have. Most older systems and some newer like Sunfire 6800 had db25 ports. Newer systems can have db9 or even RJ45 serial ports.
