I am running a simple home network with 2 computers, 1 system with Windows 98 SE and the other running ME. I have no problems at all sharing the Internet connection, but am having trouble with the printer. I have gone through all the troubleshooters to no avail. The printer and printer path shows up correctly on both computers, but when I try to print via the network printer the printer box opens up then says unable to open file. The computer which is connected directly to the printer prints fine. Can anyone help me.

crazydazy -

Just to confirm: Both PC's have file and print sharing turned on? Share your entire C:\ drive (to ensure spooler is shared as well) - Remember to right click the printer icon on the local pc, goto sharing and give it a share name. Remember to have the same workgroup in your properties. Remember to install all drivers on the 2nd pc. Hope this helps ~

what type of printer, try truning off the spooler file in printers

Thanks for your suggestions guys, both computers have file and print sharing, and yes the C drive is shared. The workgroups are the same and the printer has a sharing name. In fact even the path name to the printer is correct. The drivers are installed on both computers . The printer I am using is a Lexmark 1020 Colour jet printer. Any more suggestions.

In 95 and 98 I've found that printers have the horrible habit of disappearing from an otherwise viable network. Solution is to remove it from the machine that can no longer see it and reinstall. No reason for the glitch, no other solutions seem to work. I've seen the same problems in NT. So I'm not surprised that it would be in ME.

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

If you didn't already, try this:

Install the printer as a local printer, then after you have confirmed it is working locally, move it back to the machine it will reside on. Now change the printers path to reflect that it is on a network. I have found Lexmark and Canon printers don't seem to install the printer drivers correctly if you do a network install.

From what I have seen, the Lexmark 1020 printer does not support network redirection/printing. It also doesn't work, or at least I could not get it to work, in Windows 2000.

Two reasons why I dumped it and went to a better model...I ain't complaining too much, the printer only cost $70 from "Wally-World". It served its purpose!

Wich OS is the remote OS. (The one the Printer is not connected to). Windows ME DOES have issues with printer sharing. It cant resolve the location correctly when printing to a network printer. Try updating windows ME and see if that helps. If that does not help use microsofts knowledge base to troubleshoot more.

Good Luck

Many thanks for everyones help. The OS the computer that is not connected to is Win98 SE. I have tried all the suggestions, but when I come to print anything the following happens. The printer dialogue box comes up in the bottom right hand corner just like it does on the computer directly connected to the printer. The printer then clicks as if it is going to start printing then in the printer status box it comes up "unable to open file".
