home network internet sharing

Can anyone help. I have networked my 2 home computers and they are fine for file and printer sharing but i can't get the internet connection to work from the client machine. I have tried to run the internet connection wizard from the client machine whilst the gateway machine is connected to the internet and have specified connect through LAN etc but internet explorer just opens with page cannot be displayed all the time. When I open the browser on the client machine it makes the gateway machine dial up the internet and the internet is fine on that machine but not on the other. Also the set up doesn't stay on the client machine and when you go into it again it has reverted to dial up using phone line etc. Also it tries to dial up even when I click on the main PC in network neighbourhood even before I try to open the browser. Any ideas - I can't think of anything else to try

Couple of things to check. (You didn't say what OS you are using, so I'll assume Win2K.)

Make sure both machines are in the same WORKGROUP.

The gateway ip address should be 192.168.0.1 for your lan card.

Your client machine(s) should specify to obtain addresses automatically.

Make sure the dial-up connection is the one set for internet sharing.

After checking the above, check the ip address of the client machine (DOS window -> IPCONFIG /ALL).

They are both in the same workgroup. My gateway machine is running ME and my client W95. I have 192.168.0.1 for the main machine and 192.168.0.2 for the client - is this wrong?
I only have one dial up connection and have set it for sharing. Not sure what the last bit means - do I open DOS prompt window and type IPCONFIG/ALL in there and what do I do with the IP address when I get it?

You may or may not want to specify an IP address for your client machine. But it's not wrong to do so, you just need to be sure you add the gateway address as well as the dns addresses. By going to a DOS box and entering IPCONFIG /ALL (note the space), it will return the IP addresses associated with your nic.

On your gateway, was this an upgrade to ME from 98SE? If so, did you uninstall ICS before installing the ICS for ME?

You did install ICS didn't you? And ONLY on the gateway machine. The others don't need it as long as they support TCP/IP communications.

The ME machine came with ME installed and hasnt been upgraded from 98. It has ICS installed on it and I loaded it to the 95 machine via a set up disk. Will this cause a problem? - It wasn't working before I did this either. I have specified the IP address of the gateway machine in the IP/TCP properties of the client machiine by adding it on the gateway tab and have checked enable DNS followed by the same IP address on the DNS config tab.
I did what you suggested with the DOS prompt but am not sure what I should do with the info it returns. Very grateful of any help as I'm new to all this

The important parts are the addresses. Make sure they are correct.

Also, check your TCP/IP properties to ensure that the following items are enabled on the LAN connection:

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

You probably need to add NetBUI Protocol on BOTH systems as well.

The 95 machine didn't need to have ICS installed. However, during the installation of ICS on the gateway machine, it will create a client diskette to be used to set up the client machines. (I'm not sure on ME how to create the diskettes after installation is completed.) You really shouldn't need the diskette as long as you manually configure the connection properly.
