Home Network for DSL

Hi guys, I just got DSL from Bellsouth. We have more than one computer. On their website it says that i can set up a home network for $5 additionally a month. I thought that was strange. Why a monthly fee?

Why can't i just use the same line and split it or something? Or use the lines in the house?

Do i have to do this through Bellsouth? I don't feel like i should have to.

Near me, (the delta in MS) Bellsouth uses Westell routers that support 250+ devices. Try just adding a 4 port Switch. (or as many ports as you might ever need, if more than 4)

The extra fee is a monthly charge to have the Westell Versalink 327W wireless 4-port modem/router instead of the one-port Westell 6100 non-wireless modem/router.

As jimbopalmer suggested, add an inexpensive switch. If you need wireless, buy your own Wireless router and connect it to the modem. Here are instructions:

Isn't it necessary to use a router for sharing the internet connection?

The reason is because how will the second computer get its IP configuration? DHCP on the modem?
