Has anyone succeeded in making their own 'bare metal recovery' solution for Legato Unix?

I'm finding the NRM product a bit pricey, plus the Unix version currently only does netbooting, while the Windoze NRM uses burned/bootable CDs. As with anything, time is money and if it is going to take too long to create a solution I will just end up buying NRM I guess.

I have a 'white paper' on the subject (boots via CD a mini-Solaris and runs Legato client to talk to server), but am curious if anyone has been able to 'roll their own'.

Thanks!

Like most other applications you can write your own, using tools and utilities that come with the OS. But the real problem is, does it pass the Bus test?

Bus test? If the guy who wrote the Ultility/Program gets hit by a Bus, who will maintain and update it in the future? This is the real problem with home grown apps, it has to be maintained and this can take more time and effort than it is worth. Most times, buy is a better option than build.

Thanks for the sage advice john7... a very important consideration.

Years ago there was a cartoon (probably from Computerworld) that a computer-savy person can relate to: The cartoon depicted a widow with two small children huddled against her, in the rain, at her husband's funeral. A trench-coat wearing man, holding an umbrella is asking her "Did he mention anything about 'source code'?"
