Currently, there are two Macs at home (older iMac and a G3 beige tower). Recently signed up for comcast cable internet, and wish to network it. Hoping to find advice on equipment needed.

Goal: Modem/router setup in basement with ethernet cable to G3; wireless setup for the iMac on second floor bedroom.

Will need to expand in a few months to add a PC. Any suggestions on economical hardware and what I'll need to get started?

Thanks,
Max

I would get a linksys router and run a patch cable from it to the router/modem. Then hook a pc to the linksys router with a patch cable. Configure the router using the pc. Then have airport cards in the macs and configure using DHCP. Make sure the firewall software is enabled on the linksys router.

This is a few months late for the original question, but yeah - that's the set up I use; cable modem to linksys WAP/Router; wired connections to basement servers; wireless access for iBooks and Powerbooks.

Like Macit says, enable the firewall on the linksys, but also enable MAC filtering on the wireless side as well.
