Hi All

I want to setup a small home network i.e forest, domain, subdomain etc...I have three computers available....I have Virtual Server 2005 to obviously create virutal computers......the computer where I have virutal server installed has 4 network cards 3.4Ghz and 2Gb RAM...i have a very standard switch.
Is it possible to setup AD so that replication works what IP's should I use, is a GW necessary, should I call the the forest something like domain.local. Is the dot after local necessary....It's a practice domain so there will be no internet access neccesary.

Can't wait for your help...I will addd more info if neccesary?

By GW I'm assuming that you mean the default gateway? If you are then you don't need a gateway unless you want to get on the internet.

You should use a private IP submit 192.168.0.0/24 works fine.

Your domain name would be "domain.local". The period at the end isn't needed.

Jacket,

Since you're posting in the Microsoft certification and testing Forum, I assume that you're setting up this practice domain to gain experience with a Microsoft Server OS.

Different exercises in different books on different topics have you setting up the network and the server in different configurations.

Installing and removing server roles will be an advantage in the field, even if it seems tedious in the lab.

In short, be prepared to overhaul your server and network on a fairly regular basis, if you're setting this up to do exercises out of a book.
