HMC Operator Panel Error 0517

Ok, so a partition on my test server running Aix 5.3 decides to hang. Cant get to it over the network, nor via virtual terminal from the HMC, so no option but to do a shutdown immediate.

Now the partition wont boot. Gets stuck during boot with an 0517 operator error code on the HMC.

Ive booted the box from CD, and fsck'd the rootvg filesystems....no errors found, but it still wont boot.

What do i need to do to get this up and running again ?

517 is usually the problem with jfslog, some times it's also indicates the IPL_rootvg file doesn't exists... so here is the step for jfslog:

Boot into service mode from the installation cds or NIM.

#fsck -y /dev/hd2
#fsck -y /dev/hd3
#fsck -y /dev/hd4
#fsck -y /dev/hd9var
#fsck -y /dev/hd10opt

#logform /dev/hd8

If you want to eliminate something before reformatting your log (assumes you normally boot from hdisk0):-

boot into maintenance mode

bosboot -ad hdisk0

and try a normal boot cycle.

I have recently started a hung box in this way - but I don't recall the LED code, sorry
