i'm setting up a new 55A with an HMC, everything looks fine so far except for the vterm console with the default partition.

from the looks of it, it appears the terminal settings are not correct, i'm getting mostly garbled output on the console running through the HMC. i'm guessing the garbage is control characters, as most of the text strings you'd expect during the boot process are readable. once the partition is in a 'Running' state, the terminal does not respond.

not sure what to do next as i don't see anywhere to configure terminals for hosts on the HMC.

anyone have ideas?

Hi there,

did you create a profile where you assigned the hardware components ? If not you should do this.

Are you getting a message where you are asked to choose MDC when starting the partition ? If so, choose NOT to use MDC ...
(Can't remember the exact message text is.)

I had the same issue!

It was caused by preinstalled system wich was on default/all resource partition. The had to be some AIX with language I was not able to work with. Once I reinstalled the system from my mksysb everything works fine.

TSch,

the users of this system want to run it with just a single partition, so i have been working with the default profile with all resources assigned to it.

While activating the preloaded LPAR, the HMC will ask if you want to start it up with Manufacturing Default Configuration (MDC) or plain LPAR -> choose plain LPAR. The LPAR will come up as a normal LPAR with console working.

Other method is to leave that LPAR alone, create a new LPAR and enable the option to assign all hardware to it. Then it is just a matter of finding the right boot disk from the SMS menu...

HTH,

yeah i just figured that out/remembered it.

checking off MDC did the trick.

thanks for the replies.

As Thomas already pointed out in the first reply... ;-)

HTH,

Yep yep. i wasn't sure what he was talking about until i powered the system into standby and walked through activating the profile again, then everything clicked into place.. so to speak :)

now I remember - when I met this problem, I did exactly p5wizard said - created new partition with all resources assigned and it fixed.

thx for the info about MDC
