HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry entries playing silly buggers

I have added an entry to the Windows registry in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE area using a Windows API. When I reboot or log off and back on to the PC and first run my program, it does not seem to see the registry entry. However, when I run regedit to view the entry it is there, and after doing so, my program can then see the entry. Any ideas folks?
