Kill these processes:

Before fixing, turn off System Restore.

Thanks for the Reply.

I take it I use HijackThis for killing and removing ?

Jason

Sorry, you need to use Task Manager or a third party application such as Process Explorer to kill the processes. (ctrl+shift+esc to bring up Task Manager)

Then yes, put a check mark beside the ones I said to remove and click the Clean button. :)

The ?ttrib.exe will that display as attrib.exe in task manager ?

Jason

Taken from MAJORGEEKS ........ thanks to "QWERT"

The file you are seeing is actaully "?ttrib.exe". It appears to be attrib.exe because of some unicode conversion vulnerbility or something like that. Therefore, it's not the microsoft window's attirbute utility.

First you have to go to Tools-> Folder Options -> view and uncheck where it says hide protected system files. the file "?ttrib.exe" somehow managed to give itself a system file attirbute, but actually there shouldn't be any file with that attribute in system32 folder.

Then sort the files by name, and you should see a file named "attirb.exe" after the Zs, it also has a MPC icon. But note that the file isn't grouped with other "a*.*" files cuz the "a" you see here is not what it seems like. Then b4 you delete, it go to task manager (Ctrl +Alt + Del). Kill the porcess attrib.exe and asrw.exe (explain later), and then delete the "attrib.exe" that has that sneaky system file attribute.

Now go to Documents and settings\<your username>\Application data\ and delete asrw.exe. Or "?ttrib.exe" will just keep coming back.

Okay. Apparently you did your own homework. :) How are you coming along on this? What symptoms are/were you having?

Micheal

Early symptoms were ;

V slow bootup
Browser hijacked
Powerscan 1.1 popups
Blank internet explorer pages

Currently after running all the normal suggestions from this forum which included :

Manual Live update of Norton AV
Full Scan with Norton AV
CWshredder x 2
Spybot x 2
AD Aware x 3
Hijackthis - log printed and published

Jobs a good one and no problems with the machine.

Have educated the user (sister) and left her with the above utilities.

Definately going to make a small contribution to the authors all 4 of the above utilites

Many thanks to You also for the HJT log identifications.

Jason
