hitTest in Flash 5

dang me, the code isn't working. here's the file:

and it seems to be getting stuck on the hitTest part. i've tried testing each of the mcs individually and they all work; and when i put the same code for the hitTest into an mc, *it* worked; but when i put them all together, it stops at hitTest. this is a class assignment, so i have to do it this way. i am totally stuck, and the assignment is due in a week. help me, pleeeeease!!
