is there a program or website to check how many hits another site has had?

i know someone that had it, but i now cannot remember!

You will only be able to check that info if you have access to the logfiles of that particular site.

You may be thinking of

http://www.alexa.com

, which gives traffic information for sites. However, this is the number of hits from the (small) set of people with the Alexa toolbar installed, rather than all hits.

There's no way to tell how many hits another site has had unless they tell you.
