I am on vista ultimate and i have just purchased a 500gb hitachi hard drive, it is the T7K500 and the model number is HDT725050VLA360.

The problem im having is that it wont install the drivers when its connected, vista asks me to search for them and i do but it doesnt find anything.

The drive has a NTFS partion but still it wont work, it just has the yellow icon in device manager, i dont want to have to format the drive as i have things on there that i just cant loose.

I have been on hitach's website to see if drivers do exsist but they say that they are not required.

Any help would be great.

Can you put the drive into the other machine you had it in, and grab the data off.

I'm tippin you'll need to re format the sucker.

It was not in another machine and even when it has been formatted it still asks for the drivers.

I'm not sure we're fully grasping the issue here...

You said, "i dont want to have to format the drive as i have things on there that i just cant loose.", and, "...and even when it has been formatted it still asks for the drivers.".

So tell us how and under what circumstances you managed to get "things on there" in the first place onto this SATA drive?

What make and model of computer are you using, and what type of hard drive came with the machine, i.e. what's Vista installed on? IDE, SATA, or what?

Does this drive show up under Disk Management? If so, what does it say? If it DOES show, can you allocate it a drive letter?

I'm a little lost too. If you are willing to format the thing then try nuking the partition. There MAY be something wrong there, but it sounds a bit suss.

Don't know about anyone else but I have never had a hard drive ask for driver disks. Unless ofcourse if its a SCSI hdd, and it uses an external controller?
