Hello smart people,

I was thinking about implementing SIP trucking for our HiPath 4000 v5. We currently have 3 PRIs that handle all inbound/outbound calls. We have 1 IPDA system tied to the 4000 and 2 other site, which are connected to us via cornet. 2 cornet circuit for 1 site and 1 for the other. Both of these site will be shutdown early next year.

Our long distance bill has been increasing over the last 6 months, so I was thinking about implementing some SIP trunking to handle only outbound calls and then slowly get rid of the PRIs.

My question is, can I use the port/card from the cornet to handle the SIP trucking? And what is the overall feeling or anyone who has SIP trunking working on their system?

I am probably going to upgrade my whole world starting in the next few months and I am fighting hard to keep it all Siemens. I have a 4000 V5 right now that has a PRI and a Cornet; it is spoked off the center hub which is a 9006.6 80E which has its own 3 PRI circuits. I have studied the possibility of doing just what you're planning as part of this upgrade. I am told the 4000 natively supports SIP, and you should be able to use STMI(2) cards for the SIP trunks. You have to configure the board for what capacities you want, so if you are not installing a new board you would first have to delete all the devices off the card you want to change, and then re-provision it for however much SIP trunking vs other stuff, and then you can set up what you need to. Since I haven't actually done it all I can say is that is what they told me the procedure was. I know in our CO the LEC (AT&T) does not have SIP so I would have to get it from a 3rd party provider, such as Earthlink.

That is as far as I have gotten on it so far.
I will keep an eye on here to see what other folks say.

You are referring to "SIP Service Provider", which is where your system has an IP connection directly to the vendor's Central Office. Most customers have not implemented this solution for one reason or another - but mainly cost. Based on input from many customers, PRI is by FAR cheaper than the SIP Service Provider option. But you should check with your provider first before making a decision. The SIP Service Provider connection utilizes the STMI board (STMI2,STMI4, or vSTMI), and this service is supported in your HiPath 4000 V5 switch.
