Hello,

I'm new to Linux. My problem is, a colleague who was responsible and has setup Linux on one of our servers has gone.

My question is,
1.how to get a quick and useful hints about how to use Linux?
2.how do I know which version or type of Linux I have?
3.very important to us (and me), is it possible to send documents via Fax through a Linux machine?

I know, that all my questions seems very general, but I have to start somewhere. :))

Please help! Thanks

Andre

Linux is provided through distributions using names such as Fedora, Debian, Mandrake, Ubunto, CentOS, Suse, etc. Each distribution makes things easier/harder for the user depending upon the user's talent/laziness/purposes. Do some research on this topic.

For a good base of linux stuff, visit:

Hylafax is the hands-down best linux-based Fax product I've used on linux. Only real trick with any modem being used with linux is to use modems with all the necessary hardware on the modem itself. This is as opposed to software driven modems (often called Winmodems). These software modems function quite well in Windows, but present challengies to a newbie that frankly aren't worth the effort.

US Robotics/3Com makes a great set of hardware modems for PCI internal or Serial external applications.

Good luck.

Way back when I was at USR, they didn't support UNIX/Linux programs using their modems (although it was used internally).

If I remember correctly (this was before the 3COM buyout) Hylafax was the one used internally.

I've read a few about fax over Linux, and almost all articles suggest Hylafax.

How can I get this program, install it and configure the driver on Linux? (please remember, I'm a newbie here in Linux).

In what format should a file be, so we can fax it? Can I fax pdf, word, txt, excel, etc files?

For your information, my colleague has installed an ISDN Card (Fritz PCI) and it should be ready to use. What's left is this Hylafax program.

Thanks!
