Hey all,

A friend got hijacked by a Cool Web Search variant. This one continually changes his homepage to some ad-related site, and adds 4 unwanted entries to his favorites. We've tried CWShredder, Spybot, Adaware, and a few others. They do a good job of cleaning it off, but upon reboot its back.
Since the hijack, he's also noticed that something called "Win Min" fails to end properly when shuting down. I've googled this, and it seems to be tied into the malware. I found a thread suggesting deleting any extra copies of "Winlogon" that might be floating around in places this legit windows file shouldn't be. I did this, but it had no effect. The OS is Windows XP, and we DID disable system restore and reboot, but this had no effect.

Here's the log:

I don't do many of these, but these definately don't look good:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)

Also take out these:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysUpd] C:\WINDOWS\sysupd.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ziphelp] C:\WINDOWS\ziphelp.exe
PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

Standard procedure:
1. Switch off system restore, as you are running WinXP
2. Terminate sysupd.exe, ziphelp.exe and powereg scheduler v3.exe from task manager, if you can't get into it because of malware, use process explorer from 3. Have HijackThis fix these items that smah and I have suggested.
4. Run a full virus/spyware scan - use at least two separate scanners, because no anti spyware detector picks them all up.
5. Reboot
6. Run another full scan with each checker to ensure it is still clean, just in case something was missed.
7. Reactivate system restore.

Thx guys. The Pc now appears to be free of all spyware/malware junk.

The instructions for Win98 are exactly the same, just ignore the sections on System Restore as they only apply to XP and Me.
