In my outlook inbox I have several subfolders, each of which has several subfolders, and I have rules to filter mail into them. I dont want them open all of the time, but have to if i want to know where a new mail has gone. Is it possible to make new mail highlight the rootfolder of a subfolder. EG

-Inbox
-My Sub Folder
-Sub Folder 2
-Sub Folder 3

If i get mail in Sub Folder 2 is it possible to make My Subfolder highlighted???

I think the best solution to this is to configure your Outlook Today page to display your subfolders, rather than trying to get the root folder to highlight (which I can't think of a way to do).

Here are the instructions for Outlook 2000. Go to Outlook Today (the root folder of your entire mailbox), and you'll probably see Calendar, Messages, and Tasks sections, with useful information underneath. Go to the upper-right-hand corner of the page and click on Customize Outlook Today. Under Messages, there's a button called Choose Folders. Click on it and you'll get a Select Folder dialog box. Then, check the box next to every folder that can possibly have new, unread mail delivered to it (that you want to monitor). That is, check every folder that is the destination folder of the filters you have set up. Hit OK.

Then, under Startup, check the box that says "When starting, go directly to Outlook Today." Click on Save Changes. Under Messages, you'll see all your important folders displayed, and the number next to them is the number of unread messages that the folder contains. Now, every time you open Outlook, you will be able to monitor the unread messages in all your folders. Clicking on the name of any of those folders will take you directly to that folder.

Also, periodically throughout the day, you can go to your Outlook Today page and take a look, to see if anything of note has happened in your folders. Furthermore, if you want to, you can write some code in the NewMail event to display Outlook Today every time you receive a new message that meets the conditions you specify. I haven't tried this yet, though.

I thought of a way to do what you originally asked. Please see this post of mine:

Sometimes, it takes 10 months of thinking, 1 second of realization, and 1 day of doing!!

Enjoy,
