Highlighting lists

Is it possible to highlight a list item based on criteria? I have a sharepoint help-desk, and I would like to have any item in my task list older than 'x' amount of days turn red-or whatever.

Is this possible without exporting to SQL or Access?

No but you can create a view that would show items over x days old. or you can make your view show the oldest items first
